What Magnus Said...

I can hardly keep up with all the funny things Magnus says these days.  Most of the quotes below are from today alone.  Enjoy the chattering!

Magnus coins a new word combo
Magnus: Mooooooommy I did a _____ ____
Gina: A comic book?
Magnus: No a _____ ____!
Gina: A comet burp?
Magnus: No a _____ ____!
Gina: A.... vomit-burp?
Magnus: Yeah!!!!

One day later, I finally understand the vomit-burp
Gina: What does a vomit burp sound like?
Magnus: Like that, <imitates a belch>

He tells everybody he's a big boy now:
Po po: Who gave you that ball?
Magnus: Maya
Po po: You are a lucky boy!
Magnus: No, a lucky BIG boy... and maya is a small girl

When did Mommy become an airplane?
Gina: Ok, one last time, and then after that, mommy has to go up up up to the.... <the office>
Magnus: big blue sky!

Uncle Alex becomes an honary Seto
Magnus: <Pointing at a Seto family portrait circa 2001> Uncle Alex, Gong gong, Po po, mommy!
Gina: Are you sure it's Uncle Alex?
Magnus: Yeah! Uncle Alex, Gong gong, Po po, mommy!
Gina: Are you sure it's not Uncle Jenning?
Magnus: No it Uncle Alex!

Who needs Meyers-Briggs when you have Magnus around?
Magnus: Maya don't like new people, he an introvert, and when he like new people, he an extrovert
Po po: And what are you?
Magnus: I am stomping like an elephant! <runs away slapping his feet on the ceramic tiles>

Magnus likes to have the occasional flash-back:
Magnus: do you remember gong gong, I used to call Po-po! <gutteral sounding> and Ti ta! ?

London (Ontario) Olympics

Since we were already in Burlington, I decided to do a quick day trip to London to visit Mina and Ray and all the kids.  (Apologies to all other Londoners we missed).

We had a fabulous day, just mucking about the house, going to the park, having snacks on the lawn, watching Lucas and Magnus play and compete in the backyard, the front yard, in the house, etc...  That night Magnus slept like a rock

Here are some pictures and videos from the day:

Flower girls Maya and Jada:

Lina in her new dress entertaining Maya with her new toy:

Random shot of Magnus and Lucas on scooters:

This is right after Lina yells "Millipede!!" and scares the stuffing out of Popo:

Magnus and Lucas also entertained us a lot with allegations and counter allegations of phantom bodily harm.  They even argued about which one was the real "po po" and the real "yee po".   Eventually they either agreed to disagree or they just got distracted and moved on.  Most likely the latter!

She'll Sit Before She Rolls

As predicted by her pediatrician aunt, Maya is sitting before she has mastered rolling:

Until then, she'll continue to be the giggly victim of Magnus' "I love my sister" hold:

Boilington

Magnus, Maya, and I have just returned from an extended staycation in Burlington (or "Boilington" as Magnus likes to pronounce it) with all of Kendrick's brothers and sisters.

After a few kid friendly modifications (foam mats, bathtub, booster chair, extension cord, stool, travel crib, Magnus' car collection) Goldie's apartment served as an excellent home away from home (toronto) away from home (dubai).  It did however take a few days for the kids to get used to the new place and the new people.  Magnus was often telling us that "Maya don't like new people", and it was in Burlington that he developed the habit of hugging my leg.  But in the end they both soaked up all the attention lavished on them.

Here is a set of photos from Auntie Tristany's camera during an outing to the waterfront park:

Maya's new travel crib:

Rosebud to rosebud:

"And that's how you do a purple nurple.."

Record Holder for the "Longest Time Without Making Magnus Cry"

Afternoon crankiness.  Didn't want Auntie Elena to help lift him onto the bench.

Maya soothes Magnus:

I believe those belong to Magnus!!

Full house in Boilington

Hang on Magnus!

And here's a special edition of "What Magnus Said" in Boilington!

Tristany: Wind the bobbin up, wind the bobbin up, push, pull, push, pull, Magnus!
Magnus: No! It not Wind the bobbin up, wind bobbin up, push, pull, push, pull, Magnus! It wind the bobbin up, wind the bobbin up, pull, pull, clap clap clap!

Uncle Alex has no snappy comeback for Magnus
Gina: Magnus, would you like to go swimming with Uncle Reginald and Uncle Alex?
Alex: Uncle Alex is not going swimming, I'm afraid.
Magnus: Uncle Alex is afraid!

After being told not to address Auntie Goldie as "Goldie"
Magnus: Gol-----
Gina: What did you say Magnus?
Magnus: Gol-----
Gina: What did you say?!
Magnus: Goldfish! Goldfish! Goldfish!

A 7 year old Burlington native chats us up at the grocery checkout:
Boy: So you're not his mommy? <looking at Magnus>
Gina: Oh yes, I'm his Mommy.
Boy: <looks at Clementine> So... he has two mommies?
Gina: Um, no, that's his Aunt.
Boy's Father: C'mon, let's go!

Google maps, look out:
Gina: Where's Uncle Reginald?
Magnus: At 425 Burlington!

Pork lover:
Clementine: Go Canada! Magnus, are you Canadian?
Magnus: Nope!
Gina: Yes Magnus, you are Canadian!
Magnus: No, I am Canadian bacon
Maya starts fussing:
Magnus: Maya is an introvert!

Magnus is a smart alec:
Magnus: Auntie Goldie, go sit on the white chair!
Gina: Magnus, that's not polite.  Either you let Auntie Goldie sit next to you, or else you go sit in the white chair all by yourself.
Magnus: OK <runs over to the white chair and sits down>

Boilington follow up:
Gong gong: <to Gina> Tomatoes are acidic.
Magnus: No gong gong, You say to-may-to, I say po-tah-to. You say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to

A big thank you to our lovely host, Goldie-Auntie-Goldie, for giving up her apartment, sleeping on a couch, waking up every morning with Maya or Magnus invading the living room, and helping with all the meals, the laundry, and working full time to boot! Thank you too to Auntie Clemmie, who crossed the country to come see us and chauffeured us everywhere. We benefited not only from her medical skills but also her teaching skills: Magnus turned scooter-pro under her watchful eye, and I had a private home-ec tutor for a segment entitled, "Freezer Fundamentals and Fun with Fish Sauce".  She also championed our trip to the zoo, which was probably the best zoo trip I've had since the 80's. Thanks to Uncle Reginald and Auntie Elena, for having us over for lobster, and for coming over to swim, play, eat, and most importantly, quest for chocolate ice cream! And thank you to our flat-mates the Floridians, Auntie Tristany and Uncle Alex, for soccer coaching, winding the bobbin and magnus up, and uttering the most memorable "Magnus!". Thank you all for your presents, your time, your dancing, your singing, your spoiling but not over-spoiling, and most of all your good company!

Emily and Danella

Today our little friends Emily (9 years old) and Danella (20 months old) went back to Vancouver with their parents.  During their visit my parents' home saw non-stop action and rowdy fun.  Magnus loved following Emily around, and jumped at any chance to chase her - indoors, on the lawn, in the backyard, or at the mall.  Danella was initially terrified of Magnus, and would cry everytime she saw him.  However, by the end of the visit she was much more comfortable.  It helped that Magnus slowly started to share his toys more, although I still had to curb his complaints ("NO Danella!  It MINE!") several times a day.  And last but not least, I got to spend some excellent quality time with Emily, whether it was zooming up and down a roller coaster at Wonderland, or just bumming around the basment playing cards.

On the second last day I made sure to take the camera out and snap a few shots of our house guests:

The sisters, pretty in blue:

Magnus taking a breaking from his running; Danella admires the concrete?

A typical chase :

Camera woman and her mini-me (who was giggling every time I pulled that string)

Saying goodbye was hard, especially for Magnus.  After they left at 7pm today he put us through tantrum after tantrum right up until bedtime.  The weather, coincidentally, was stormy, and calmed down just as Magnus dropped off to sleep.  Secret mutant powers or just pathetic fallacy?   You be the judge.  Goodnight all!

What Magnus Said...

Dubious grasp of anatomy:
Gina: <changing Maya's diaper> Magnus, does Maya have a weewee?
Magnus: No, because Maya is small! When Maya is bigger, she will have a weewee, just like Magnus!

Intolerance:
Popo: <asks Magnus something in Mandarin>
Magnus: No Popo, I don't wan't you to talk anymore!

Know it all:
Magnus: After you burp you have to say scuse me!
Gina: That's right! Who burped?
Magnus: Gong gong!

After a minor spill:
Magnus: <sob> ... and then magnus fell down and he skated....and magnus hurt magnus' pants!!! <sob>
Gina: Oh you fell down and you slid, and then you hurt your leg here where your pants are?
Magnus: Yeeeeeeeah!!! <sob>

Magnus tries to tempt Maya with his sippy cup:
Magnus: Maaaaaayyyyyaaaaa, do you want some milk? No you can't because you are laughing too much!!
Magnus: Maaaaaayyyyyaaaaa, do you want some milk? No you can't because you are too small!!!

Magnus stubbornly refuses Gong gong's help, and falls on his bum:
Magnus: ...and Magnus tried to get Magnus' scooter and Magnus fell down!
Gina: And what did Gong gong say?
Magnus: Mo Gwai Yong!

Advantage: seniors
Magnus: Maya don't like new people!
Gina: Actually, what I said was that Maya is afraid of new people
Magnus: Yeah, Maya don't like new people! Maya only like old people!!!

Gina: How did you kiss Maya?  Show me.
Magnus: Like that, Mmmmmm <kisses Maya on the lips> Eew Maya, gross, again! <wipes her mouth with a tissue>
